The True Identity of the Silver Wire at the Top of the Transmission Tower

The gleaming thin wire at the very top of the transmission tower is professionally called the overhead ground wire (also known as the lightning protection wire). It acts like a "lightning rod hat" for the power grid. Unlike the thick conductors that carry electricity below, this wire connects directly to the metal part of the tower and is grounded, specifically designed to intercept lightning strikes. Interestingly, some overhead ground wires also contain optical fibers, serving as a "highway" for communication transmission.

Special Features of Materials and Structure
Lightning Protection Armor: Made of steel-cored aluminum stranded wire or all-aluminum alloy, it is more resistant to high temperatures and corrosion than ordinary conductors.

Dual Mission: The outer aluminum layer conducts electricity and protects against lightning, while the inner steel core increases strength and resists wind sway.

Precision Design: The suspension height is calculated to ensure that the protection angle covers all conductors below.
